MAINE MEDIA WORKSHOPS + COLLEGE BOOK ARTIST IN RESIDENCE 2017
OCTOBER 1 - 28
The Book Artist in Residence has unlimited access to our dedicated book arts studio, which includes two Vandercook presses (a Universal I and a Universal III), a polymer plate maker, and bindery equipment. The studio is also adjacent to our alternative process photography lab, a center of activity for students working with a wide range of historic techniques. The selected artist is an important part of the vibrant community of students and faculty at Maine Media Workshops + College, hosting open studio hours, demonstrations, and presenting one or more lectures about their work.
The residency includes a weekly stipend of $350, materials support of up to $500, a travel stipend, meals on campus, and spectacular accommodations overlooking Rockport harbor.
Selection will be based on the proposed project the artist plans to complete at Maine Media and their past work. Submissions will be juried by a panel of well-known artists and professionals in the field of book arts. We would particularly welcome an artist whose project incorporates digital or analog photography with the printed word in an innovative book form. The deadline for submission is May 15, 2017.
Deadline: MAY 15, 2017

THE SELECTION PROCESS
Submissions will be juried by a panel of well-known artists and professionals in the field of book arts. Finalists from the first round of jurying will be notified by May 24, 2017 and will be asked to submit a maquette of their proposed book project (actual size, or, at minimum, two spreads with an example of how it will be bound) by June 23, 2017. All applicants will be notified of final decisions via email by June 30, 2017. Selection will be based on the proposed project and past work. As an institution dedicated to interdisciplinary pursuits among the fields of photography, film, book arts, and writing, we encourage projects that combine photographic images with the printed word in innovative book forms.
We ask that the recipient of the Book Artist in Residence donate one piece from the edition / residency to the Maine Media Gallery, to benefit the scholarship fund. The Book Artist in Residence will also be asked to give a public lecture on their work, in addition to hosting several open studio events for the community.
