Under the name “Outdoor Viewfinder,” Jason Waicunas is a Portland, Oregon-based professional photographer and a licensed guide & outfitter who teaches photography classes at some of the most beautiful locations in the Pacific Northwest. His experience began at the age of 10, when he took his first solo hiking trek after a winter storm with a Nikon FTN camera and a roll of Kodachrome. This outing led to a career in photography that spans over 20 years and features a wide-range of highlights that include working as a consultant and test photographer for Leica, shooting and editing content for the Lord of the Rings films, and using a camera to document his 5-month hike of the 2663-mile long Pacific Crest Trail in 2005. The style of Jason's work is often depicted by the careful placement of colors, use of dramatic natural lighting, and an order of balance that defines a unique sense of composition. Jason's passion for photography is seeking out the next opportunity to make “that next great photograph” and to share it with others.
Jason's photography has been featured by a wide range of clients that include Leica Camera, Saveur Magazine, The Lord of the Rings Magazine, K2 Sports, Fender Music, RailRiders Clothing, Old Dominion University, and The Society of Architectural Historians. His educational experience includes a B.F.A. degree in photography from Old Dominion University and studying photography with Glen McClure, Richard Newman, Sam Abell, and Jay Maisel. Additionally, Jason is the Event Director of the annual outdoor festival and fundraiser event, "Pacific Crest Trail Days" and he is a member of the Pacific Crest Trail Association, the American Long Distance Hiking Association-West, and the Oregon Nordic Club.
