© Brenton HamiltonAs the digital age of visual storytelling progresses, there has been a huge upsurge in interest in the historic and alternative processes of photography. 

This is an introductory course to the noble processes of platinum, cyanotype, gum bichromate, and salted paper. Each printmaking technique is considered and practiced in lectures, demonstrations and supervised labs. Digital negatives and conventional negative processes are introduced to facilitate new work. A detailed technical notebook is produced in conjunction with a suite of finished prints.

Class meets weekly on Thursdays, Jan 7 - March 10.  Lectures, demos & discussions from 9AM - 12:30PM followed by supervised lab from 1:30PM - 5:00PM

Includes lunch on day of class.  Other daily meals may be purchased.



Brenton Hamilton

Brenton Hamilton, Chair, Professional Certificate Program in Photography, holds his MFA in photography 1992 from the Savannah College of Art & Design. His teaching specialties include, B&W Craft and Historic Processes and the History of Photography at Maine Media College. Brenton is an enthusiastic workshop leader exhibiting special care and interest in the teaching process and for his students. Brenton’s own work is inspired by the 19th century and has become a principle area of research and inspiration both as a historian and a printmaker. Devoted to the cyanotype, Brenton’s embellished images are exhibited nationally and are held in the permanent collections at the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine and the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland. Current projects include publishing: ‘OBSCURA’ a quarterly magazine devoted to contemporary issues and on going studio work.  Brenton's work is represented by TILT Gallery in Scottsdale Arizona and in Maine at Susan Maasch Fine Art in Portland.
