Can we imagine what a feminist photograph looks like? How does agency and power play a role in the medium of photography? What is the significance of the nude female body in photography’s history?
Led by Jenny Calivas, in this workshop, we will spend time discussing these questions and experimenting with our relationship to these dynamics through making photographs. Prompts will be given to help students push their work to new levels and weekly critiques will be the core of our time together. Short assigned readings will be given that introduce perspectives from feminism, queer studies, and photo history. We will also spend time looking at and discussing photographers that engage feminist ideas in their work. Students can expect an introduction to an alternative history of photography that prioritizes traditionally overlooked artists and a supportive environment to develop work in which risks and experimentation are encouraged.
No previous knowledge of feminism is needed. Our discussions will be supportive, casual, and non-academic. This workshop is for all those wanting to think about how photographs operate, especially those curious about identity, power dynamics, and the history of photography. You do not need to be a woman to take this course, all identities are welcome.
Any camera may be used – from a smartphone to a digital camera, to a film camera. There will not be much technical instruction as part of the workshop, so as long as students can easily share images that they have made, any camera is acceptable.

Instructor: Jenny Calivas
Jenny Calivas is an artist working with photography and performance. She makes her photographic work using analog processes and experimental darkroom techniques, prioritizing embodied ways of thinking and making. Her recent work consists of performative self-portraits as well as darkroom collages that investigate issues of agency and gender in relation to photography and the natural environment. Calivas’ photographs have been exhibited at The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; Light Work in Syracuse, NY; David Zwirner in New York City; LTD Los Angeles; Huxley Parlour in London and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockland, ME. She holds her MFA degree from Yale University and her undergraduate degree from The Evergreen State College. Her photographs are in the permanent collections of The Whitney Museum of American Art and The Museum of Modern Art.
