A monotype is sometimes referred to as the “painterly print” and is loosely defined as a one-of-a-kind, non-replicable print created by transferring an image from an inked ‘plate’ to paper or other receptive surface. Monotypes are often printed on an etching press, but they don’t have to be!

In this one-day online workshop, we’ll explore the possibilities of trace monotype and other hand-printed monotype techniques in our virtual studio. We’ll spend some time with the history of hand-printed monotype prints as well as contemporary examples, and Lucky will demo techniques using an overhead camera. Participants are encouraged to follow along with the demo as we aim for a sense of all creating in a studio together.

Demos will include prompts to inspire imagery and students will also receive a materials list, syllabus, and some pre-workshop prompts to prepare for the workshop day. In addition to demos for each technique, there will be camera-on studio time for working together in the virtual studio, as well as sharing of work and feedback.
