The iPhone has become a dynamic tool in filmmaking. Two recent high-profile feature films made for theatrical release – one by Steven Soderbergh, the other a Sundance hit – were shot entirely on iPhones. While iPhone users have long been aware of their ability to create spontaneous films, what are the implications of using this tool to create non-fiction, fiction, and experimental films? How is it changing the cinematic landscape? Join us and find out. Expect a fascinating weekend rich in experimentation.

In the early 1960s, the French New Wave changed the face of international filmmaking with a new aesthetic and attitude – one made possible by the portability of new lightweight cameras. The iPhone and its sister devices are changing the game again. Small enough to be convenient, economical, and discreet; powerful enough to allow for projection on a large screen, the iPhone offers new possibilities for portability and intimacy in filmmaking techniques.

Recommended for filmmakers, photographers, educators, journalists, and professionals. Using an iPhone (or a similar device or DSLR), participants will experiment with creating footage that demonstrates how this tool can be taken to a whole new level. The workshop will also explore inexpensive but powerful apps including FiLMiC Pro, lens and stabilization options, audio recording, accessories, and workflows for editing.

This intimate and immersive online workshop combines meeting as a small group in our virtual classroom via Zoom for lectures and demonstrations and doing filming and editing exercises at your location. Students will edit their work using Adobe Premiere Pro. If you do not currently have this software, you can purchase it or avail yourself of a seven-day free trial.

Note: Participants should download the free trial version of the FiLMiC Pro app which is available at the Apple App Store or via Google Play. We will also discuss other apps that provide alternatives to this subscription-based model. While students can explore the essential dynamics of how to make more effective films with their phone or DSLR without purchasing additional attachments and equipment, the tuition reduction for the online version of this class will allow you to acquire some highly recommended gear to help you get the most out of your experience. The instructor’s equipment recommendations are listed here. She is also happy to suggest affordable options that will accommodate your budget.
