This one day online workshop will explore the interactive qualities of Hedi Kyle’s storage book binding — what is hidden and what is revealed with each turn of the page. We will create a concertina binding that incorporates multiple transparent layers, pockets, windows and more! Zoom in on particular parts of images, bury information in layers of transparencies, and discover unexpected combinations as you look through, within and under the pages of your book. 

These techniques are great for housing photographs in an unusual way and adding unique sequence passages to books. Macy will suggest an assortment of images and materials to work with in a day of creative play.

Kits will be provided as part of your tuition, but plan to have available these or similar supplies:

Supplies students need to have on hand:

  • pencil
  • eraser
  • scissors
  • x-acto knife
  • glue stick
  • bone folder
  • light-duty awl
  • sketchbook

Optional/suggested supplies:

  • ruler (12 inch or larger)
  • triangle (6 inch or larger)
  • images that you find inspiring (in color, concept, design, etc) for example: patterns, your own  prints or drawings, magazine pages, found papers, old letters, photographs, anything that you think could spark a book idea
  • images with interesting silhouettes: plant forms, clip art, 2-D shapes of any kind
  • a few samples of poetry that you like–either your own or someone else’s
  • your favorite mark-making materials (example: colored pencils, pens, needle and thread, collage)
  • 6 cards (such as playing cards, postcards, greeting cards, recipe cards, photos, tarot cards, game cards, etc.)

Instructor: Macy Chadwick

Macy Chadwick received an MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and assisted book artist Julie Chen at Flying Fish Press in Berkeley for three years. After fifteen years of teaching at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco Art Institute, and San Francisco Center for the Book, Macy moved to Petaluma, California, where she is the founder and director of In Cahoots Residency. The residency provides housing and studio space to both emerging and professional artists with a focus on artists books, letterpress, printmaking, writing, and collaboration. Macy continues to create books and limited edition prints in her letterpress studio and her work is in prominent collections in the U.S. and abroad, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Yale University Special Collections, and the Jack Ginsberg Collection in South Africa.
