A film director closely collaborates with the director of photography to create a unique and expressive visual look for the story. You will spend the week with Master Director of Photography Amy Vincent ASC, recipient of the 2024 ASC Presidents Award, as she discusses her work, and shares the many challenges and successes she has experienced in achieving the visual solutions that elevate story, character, and theme.

In addition to feature credits such as HUSTLE & FLOW, BLACK SNAKE MOAN, EVE’S BAYOU, THE EXPERIMENT, and the remake of FOOTLOOSE, Vincent has shot episodes of numerous television shows, including JUSTIFIED: CITY PRIMEVAL, UPLOAD, EASTBOUND & DOWN, WAYWARD PINES, DOWNWARD DOG, LEGION, and the new AMC drama PARISH.

Case study scenes will be screened and analyzed. The theory and motivation behind specific aesthetics, lighting, lens selection, scene coverage, point-of-view, art direction, and camera movement are explored. There will be demonstrations, discussions, and reconstructions of set-ups from this master cinematographer’s body of work. Other topics include the role of color, look books and references, and how the director and director of photography communicate to achieve the desired result. We will also consider how to balance the imperative to plan with allowing for the spontaneity of discovery on the day.

Please note: An hour-long training session on Set Etiquette and Safety will be required of anyone registered for a workshop that involves production. Students only need to participate in this session once during their time on campus.

Instructor: Amy Vincent, ASC

With a 30 year career as a cinematographer, Amy Vincent is a leader and a pioneer among women in cinematography. She received the ASC Presidents Award in 2024. Her feature credits include HUSTLE AND FLOW (for which she received the Sundance Film Festival award for cinematography), BLACK SNAKE MOAN, the remake of FOOTLOOSE for director Craig Brewer, director Paul Scheuring’s THE EXPERIMENT and EVE’S BAYOU for director Kasi Lemmons, which received a Golden Satellite nomination for Best Cinematography. In addition to her feature credits, Vincent has photographed numerous television pilots including the 2024 AMC series PARISH, UPLOAD for Amazon and director Greg Daniels, PIVOTING for Fox, EASTBOUND AND DOWN for HBO, M. Night Shyamalan’s WAYWARD PINES for Fox and DOWNWARD DOG for ABC. Other television credits include JUSTIFIED: CITY PRIMEVAL (FX),  and TRUE BLOOD (HBO). She recently completed shooting A NICE INDIAN BOY, directed by Roshan Sethi. The film stars Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff and premiered at SXSW in 2024.

She has also served as Director of Photography on many Second Unit / Visual Effects shoots including LEGION, BLACK ADAM (additional unit DP), LEMONY SNICKET’S SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS, BEWITCHED, BIKER BOYZ, THE ZOOKEEPER, I HEART HUCKABEES, and GRIDLOCK’D.
