Larry Hott has been elected as Board Chair for Maine Media for a 3-year term, beginning July 1, 2024. Larry was elected following Nils Tcheyan’s decision to step down as Board Chair after 5 years in the role, as part of the Board’s practices on governance. Nils will continue to serve on the Board in a number of capacities. Nils commented “It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve as Board Chair for the past 5 years. Thanks to the leadership of Michael Mansfield and the management team we have overcome many challenges in a rapidly changing environment and continue to offer innovative and unique opportunities for filmmakers, photographers, and storytellers. I am sure that Larry will provide great leadership for us in the years ahead and appreciate his taking on the role” Lawrence “Larry” Hott brings extraordinary experience and knowledge to his role. He has served on the Board since 2016. Hott is a distinguished American academic and documentary filmmaker with a storied career in the industry. As a co-founding partner of Florentine Films, Hott joined forces with Ken Burns, Roger Sherman, and Buddy Squires in documentary production in 1978. His extensive body of work includes productions for PBS, the Library of American Landscape  History, the American Antiquarian Society, and many other prestigious institutions.

Hott’s achievements include two Academy Award nominations, a Peabody Award, the Alfred I. duPont Columbia University Award, and five blue ribbons from the American Film Festival. “I’ve been associated with Maine Media for over twenty years, first as an instructor and then as a long-time board member,” said Larry Hott. “What we teach at Maine Media has applications across every discipline and it’s for everyone — professionals, beginners, hobbyists. I’m thrilled to chair the board of an institution that is so important to the culture of Maine and, indeed, the whole country.”

As a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Hott has been recognized for his significant impact on the documentary film industry. Additionally, he has been honored as a Fulbright Program Fellow in both Vietnam and Great Britain, further underscoring his commitment to global education and cultural exchange.

“I am exceptionally grateful for Nils’ leadership and service as Board Chair,” said Michael Mansfield, President of Maine  Media. “His creative and careful guidance through both the pandemic and accreditation has been inspiring.
