This 3-day online workshop is designed for professional cinematographers, filmmakers, and digital content creators who want to take their understanding of color science and imaging workflows to a higher level. Dive deeply into the nuances of the color pipeline through prep, production, and post.

Guided by an accomplished Colorist and Color Scientist, the class will explore advanced aspects of image capture and its influence on aesthetic considerations, camera options, and making the right choices at every phase of a film. We’ll examine imaging workflows, color management, the generation and application of on-set color assets including look development and advanced LUT creation, dailies workflows, VFX pipelines, post color, and deliverables. We will explore the multiple facets of digital image capture and finishing, and how it can be utilized to best serve the photography of the film, focusing on concepts that allow working cinematographers to better understand their tools and how they can be manipulated and managed to best serve the story. 

Sessions will feature lectures, case studies, and discussions, with plenty of time for Q&A. 

A basic proficiency with DaVinci Resolve and a familiarity with the dynamics of cinematography are necessary for this class.

Instructor: CJ Julian

CJ Julian’s credits as a Colorist or Color Scientist include THE HOLDOVERS (2023), PRISCILLA (2023), MAY/DECEMBER (2023), NO HARD FEELINGS (2023), BEAU IS AFRAID (2023), the new Disney series THE ACOLYTE (2024), BARDO: FALSE CHRONICLES OF A HANDFUL OF TRUTHS (2022), THE TASTE OF MANGO (2022), DEEP WATER (2022), and many others. As an Imaging Scientist Consultant, he has collaborated with cinematographers on the design of the overall look for many feature film and television projects including SPLIT (2016), UNDER THE SILVER LAKE (2018), GLASS (2019), US (2019), SERVANT (2019), and ICON (2020).

A Certified Colorist and Certified DaVinci Resolve Trainer, CJ also has an extensive background in cinematography, lighting, and post-production. His specialties include LUT design and construction, post production color management, workflow design and implementation, custom look development, research and development for new and emerging camera and display hardware, and imaging software technologies.
