This two-day online workshop is for filmmakers, editors, artists, digital content creators, and animators interested in learning more about using motion graphics to educate, entertain and inform an audience. Whether it’s in video podcasts, branded content, in explainer videos for news sites like Vox, The Atlantic, or The New York Times; in the graphic interstitials of documentary films, or as part of the background presentation of shows like Last Week Tonight or The Daily Show, motion graphics is a vital tool for communicating complex ideas and information.

Instructor Yussef Cole’s 2023 showreel ‘Heart of Cole’.

In our first session, we’ll explore some of the basic concepts of infographics and how they interface with animation and video. Why simpler is usually better. How fast a reader can be expected to get through a block of text. Why 2D graphs are almost always clearer than 3D graphs. How to accurately show contested borders on a map, and so on.

Instructor Yussef Cole directed and animated the show open for the 19th Annual Webby Awards.

The second session will dive into several case studies from the instructor’s work directing the Emmy Award-winning graphics team for the Netflix series Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj. We’ll look at actual scripts from the show and examine in detail how to get from the written word to sketches of ideas, to designs, and finally to executed animations.

Leave with a new sense of how to make information, ideas, and data land with impact.

Note:  Experience with Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator is encouraged, but not required.
