Why do artists choose to create images in this way? What was their context? How do things like framing and gesture influence the meaning of their images? Spending time with this history will inform and inspire our own work with performative image-making.

In the first weeks prompts will be given to spur experimentation, followed by time spent on developing a focused project of each student’s choosing. Critiques will be the core part of our growth together. Students can expect to leave with a small portfolio of powerful images and the confidence to continue exploring performance-based work on their own.

Any camera may be used – from a smartphone to a digital camera, to a film camera. There will not be much technical instruction as part of the workshop, so as long as students can easily share images that they have made, any camera is acceptable.
